Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM)

Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) are the official maps for designating all roads and trails available for public motorized travel on the Deschutes & Ochoco National Forests and the Crooked River National Grassland. Visitors should not rely on any other maps for making decisions about motorized travel.

Types of Maps

National Forest Visitor Maps

Forest Visitor Maps are generalized maps of an entire national forest at a scale of 1/2" = 1 mile. They show main roads, trails, developed recreation sites and opportunities.

Ranger District Maps

Ranger District Maps are maps of a ranger district at a scale of 1" = 1 mile. These maps show more detail, such as contours, than Forest Visitor Maps. Maps for each district (and the adjacent district) can be purchased at that Ranger Districts or the Supervisor's Offices. Please note that each Ranger District stocks maps of only their district.

Wilderness Area Maps

These are maps of individual wilderness areas, at various scales and with a varying amount of detail. All have contours, trails, and roads to trailheads. Wilderness maps are available at the Supervisor's Offices and at the Ranger District that manages the area.

Quadrangle Maps

These are maps based on the USGS 7.5' series. These are the most detailed maps, at a scale of 1" = 2000' with 40' contours. Each "quad" covers approximately 6 miles by 8 miles. Complete Forest coverage is available at the Supervisor's Offices.
